AT SOME POINT THINGS HAVE TO CHANGE!

In the information technology field, we have some terms that equate to what we are seeing now in the “Pandemic” view of our lives.  I have two terms that I would like to express for this post.  The IT and Security folks should see the similarities.  The terms are the following;

  • OVERSUBSCRIBE – Selling or offering more than you have available. (I have 5000 users however I only have bandwidth to support 100.)
  • BUSINESS CONTINUITY – HOW DO WE CONTINUE WORKING IF THE BUILDING BURNS DOWN? (My favorite scenario in a Risk Assessment)

The terms listed above are always used in the Information Technology and Security field. We are constantly using these terms and seeing them in action throughout the world.

NEW WAYS OF LIVING

We are in a new phase of living during this pandemic. Our way of thinking must change because we are forced to remove the physical barriers and restrictions of our work and play lifestyles.  We “OVERSUBSCRIBE” our lifestyles by attempting to squeeze as much as possible into that box.  Whether it was the airline industry selling tickets over the number of seats they had available on the plane, squeezing 30+ students in a classroom, or squeezing as many employees as possible in an open office space. 

Pre-COVID-19

Part of our previous ways of living we oversubscribed the school system, forced all workers to physically attend worksites.  The option for limited or restricted telework was offered for employees that had the capability to work within that framework.  In some cases, no telework is available even though the business has the capability, there is just a “helicopter” manager that requires the employees onsite to maintain productivity.  Our previous way to maintain productivity by being at work physically was considered the way we measured performance and manage resources effectively. 

The school systems that are overcrowded were “OVERSUBSCRIBED”.  The count was always close to 30+ students per classroom and a single teacher. You would have thought that someone would have questioned;

  • WHEN DOES THIS BECOME A FIRE HAZARD? (If we can squeeze 10 more students, we will get it right) 😊
  • WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO IF WE HAVE TO MINIMIZE CLASSROOM SIZES BECAUSE OF A PANDEMIC? (Chime Sound)

The airline industry kept their planes “OVERSUBSCRIBED” but I believe that was based on greed.  (My opinion)

The infatuation of “I need to physically see you” is now challenged.  One of the other ways we oversubscribed is our thought process of jamming people into vehicles (commuting to work) to decrease our carbon footprint. (Traffic)

This was all Pre-COVID-19. (I know, not a term but I like it anyway 😊)

The idea to pack people into offices, planes, and schools and micromanage them until death was a death spiral waiting to happen.  While this was a bad idea from inception, the people that started this fiasco continued to go with this thought process. Which has us in turmoil now. People had to change, I can tell you for a fact, there was no way you should have 30+ students in a classroom. There is no reason that the airline industry packs the airplane like we do with commuting for work.  It seems like they are saying, I need to pack as many people as I can so I can go in the HOV-3 lane.

During COVID-19, You have no choice but to work from home.  Some essential employees had to continue working physically at their site.   The non-essential employees could work from home.  The challenge has been accepted and adopted. We can’t have the employees going into the office and get infected because “Bob” didn’t want to wear a mask.  Bob desire is to sit in the same cramped office space with staff.  “Bob” did by the way infect the staff members he was around which has caused an outbreak. OFFICE CLOSED; YOU NOW HAVE TO TELEWORK and because of BOB you are now QUARANTINED. (My name is Robert and I am not offended😊, so this should not offend the “Bobs” of the world😉😉)

The symptoms of coughing, sniffing, and sneezing was a cause for concern and now will present a higher alert for any possible COVID-19 symptoms. These symptoms will make all heads in the office turn around to see if there is a potential issue with the employee.  Now the determination to go to work is also part of a discussion about sending your children back to the overcrowded public-school system.  This decision to send them back physically also comes with a high possibility that your children will be infected. Interesting concept as I do recall the Governor of Florida stating if we can open Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart, we should be able to open the schools and according to #45 we can send folks back to the overcrowded offices to continue work.  The push to open schools is the push to send you back to work. Which in all aspects is undoubtedly crazy?

The Math looks like this;

OVERCROWDED SCHOOLS + OVERCROWDED OFFICES = COVID-19

OVERCROWDED AIRPLANES + OVERCROWDED PUBLIC FACILITIES = COVID-19

POST COVID-19

We all have our opinions and I am no different than anyone in this case. Along with the thoughts presented I believe we will be okay. As we always do… humans learn to adjust to the “new normal” of course you will have some folks that refuse to change their ways. The federal, state, local and private organizations will in fact need to adjust to reflect this new work and play lifestyle. I don’t believe you will see the old method of our work and play lifestyle.  You will in fact, always see folks that don’t want to adhere to the new ways.  That is a form of rebellion. That is why my belief is you will NOT see us going back to where we were PRE-COVID-19. Just think if we did in fact go back to our PRE-COVID-19 stance, the next pandemic would put us into the same scenario.
